FLAWLESS VICTORY!?
28-0 (W)

The Sabercats opened the 2014 season on the road.  They traveled to Worcester to take on the Wildcats.  Took them some time to knock off the rust, took really until half time to get the ship righted.  Seemed to be lots of mental mistakes, poor throws and a lot of dropped balls.  The team will need to clean up those things if they have any chancing of repeating as Champions.  The very fact that even will all those mistakes, the Wildcats were not able to take advantage.  Much to their own fault and difficulties themselves holding on to the ball, not being able to capitalize on the opportunities with dropped picks, loose balls and dumb penalties.  It seemed at times the Wildcats were battling not only the Sabercats but themselves.  They too have a lot to deal with in roster turn over, not a lot of depth and a lack of veteran leadership and young talent they are a few seasons away from being a contender.  The Sabercats took care of business, though very sloppy in their approach and came out sleep walking, they did shut out the Wildcats in their own stadium 28-0.  The season has started off very much like last year.  Opening the season against a seasoned team, who has been around a while and is established and even though they may have had a lack of numbers gave Frankie and the Sabercat offense fits, forcing bad throws, timed blitzed to rush the play.  However a few major lapse in coverage left key players open that could actually catch the ball.  A lot of the time forced plays went to known players that have trouble getting a handle on the ball which worked out in the Wildcats favor.  We all know though playing on the edge like that can be dangerous and eventually your luck runs out.  For the Wildcats it did and they just could not right the ship and the game was pretty much over after they failed to move the ball on some key drives.  A big fumble that lead to a scoop and score earlier really took the wind out of their sails.  They will need to overcome some inner demons on that and remember to put plays like that behind them in order to be successful.  The Sabercats defense was like a tidal wave it just kept crashing against them over and over and over again.  It showed that it was wearing them down and their mental state was broken and unfocused.  They were more worried about holding on to the ball then they were executing the plays that were called.  The Sabercats defense has been known to be suffocating and force you into making very poor decisions.  This was one of those games.  The Wildcats more or less beat themselves, not the Sabercats beating them.  The Sabercats defense got into their heads early and planted the seed of doubt and the Wildcats just could not shake it.

This week however the Sabercats travel to Connecticut to take on the Blackhawks.  The defense for the 'Cats will not be the issue.  It will be whether or not the offense can get things going and stop making poor decisions with the ball.  The Sabercats have to much depth at their disposal and DO NOT USE IT.  This may turn out to be their very problem when injuries do arise as they do for every team every season.  You need to utilize the fact you can rotate in fresh bodies on any given play where most of your opponents can not.  They will need to grind them down like a motar and pestal and use their depth to their advantage.  Slinging the ball around the field may get you some quick points, but it does not tire out their linemen or their linebackers.  Make them hit and chase people, tire them out.  If you have 3 guys at every position and your opponent has 4 guys for 3 positions, you have the advantage.  Treat that advantage as such and utilize it instead of taking it for granted.  Not to mention that it means your defense is spending the majority of the game on the field trying to keep them off the score board and getting tired legs.  All the conditioning in the world cannot fix the fact that the defense for the Sabercats spends almost 70% of the time on the field.  They will need all hands on deck this weekend as the Blackhawks come off a disappointing lose to Warlords in a close battle, 34-36.  This team can score but their defense is very suspect.  This is were the weapons on the Sabercats offense need to step up.  You cannot be open and drop balls.  You cannot be a half back and put the ball on the turf.  You cannot be the quarterback and make poor throwing decisions.  Their defense, unlike the Wildcats, will make you pay for it.  This is going to really test both sides of the ball this week.  The defense should take care of business this week but they will give up some points, more then they are probably comfortable with.  The real question is can the offense put up MORE points then the defense gives up in order to take home the W?  We will find out this Saturday night.

Prediction:  Unfortunately I think the 'Cats 12 game unbeaten streak comes to an end and it won't be close as the offense will struggle again with ball control, wide open receivers dropping the ball and poor throws eventually catch up with them.  Struggling to find offense the team will be forced to go for it on 4th down early and often.  As a result all that field exposure for the defense will catch up with them and they will give up some cheap scores.  Blackhawks win in a blow out 45-6.
